In the city of Harlow in the English county of Essex, the country’s first street named after the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyi, was officially opened.

This is stated on the website of the British broadcasting corporation BBC.

Fifth Avenue in Harlow has officially become Fifth Avenue-Zelensky Avenue. From now on, this street has two alternative names.

As the BBC notes, the Ambassador of Ukraine to Great Britain, Vadym Prystaiko, was supposed to be present at the opening. However, it emerged Friday morning that he had been fired after comments about Zelenskyi’s words of gratitude to allies for help, which a Ukrainian diplomat called “unhealthy sarcasm.”

Deputy Robert Helfon from Harlow said that this city is quite a suitable place to honor the Ukrainian president. During World War II, it was built for many displaced London families who were forced to leave.

“The new city of Harlow has risen like a phoenix from the ashes. We wanted to show Ukrainians what can be done – that after the victory over Russia there is hope, there are possibilities that they will have beautiful new cities,” said the deputy.

Helfon also praised the city’s residents, who have helped house and support approximately 70 Ukrainian refugees since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
