The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, signed a law according to which the dates of public holidays will be officially changed in accordance with the New Julian church calendar.
On July 14, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine supported the project regarding these changes. On July 28, the law “On Amendments to Article 73 of the Labor Code of Ukraine” was signed by the head of state.
We are talking about the transfer of such public holidays as Christmas – from January 7 to December 25, Ukrainian Statehood Day – from July 27 to July 15, Defender of Ukraine Day – from October 14 to October 1. This year, the Day of Ukrainian Statehood is celebrated according to the old date.
The full transition to the New Julian calendar will be from September 1, 2023.
“The purpose of the draft law is to abandon the Russian legacy of imposing the celebration of Christmas on January 7 and setting the date of the celebration of Christmas on December 25.
And, as a result, the postponement of the dates of the celebration of the Day of Ukrainian Statehood, when the memory of the outstanding state-builder, the Holy Equal-to-the-Apostles Prince of Kyiv Volodymyr the Great, and the Day of Defenders and Defenders of Ukraine, which is connected with the Ukrainian military traditions of commemorating the Day of the Intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos, are commemorated,” it is noted in the explanatory note.
