Ukraine honors the memory of Ukrainian heroes who gave their lives for Ukraine.
Since 2019, August 29 is the Day of Remembrance of defenders who died in the struggle for independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity in Ukraine. This day is a reminder of one of the bloodiest events of the war in eastern Ukraine – the Ilovai tragedy, in which 366 Ukrainian soldiers died, 429 were wounded, 158 went missing, and 300 were captured.
President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyi took part in the event on the occasion of the Day of Remembrance of Ukrainian defenders at the Memorial Wall of St. Michael’s Cathedral.
“…still there are no words that would be sufficient to fully describe the strength, majesty and self-sacrifice of a hero who remains forever in battle so that only his people retain their will and gain victory,” the head of state said.
The President of Ukraine and the people observed a moment of silence in memory of Ukrainian heroes who gave their lives for Ukraine. Today, “Gold Star” orders were handed over to members of the families of Ukrainian defenders who were posthumously awarded the title of Hero of Ukraine.
Also today are celebrated Nut (Third, Bread) Savior in Ukraine and the International Day of Action Against Nuclear Tests in the world.
August 29 is also the International Day of Action Against Nuclear Tests.
