Alike numerous European movie theatres Kiev filmhouse “Zhovten” welcomes an original cultural event – European Art Cinema Day on 15th of October. This event is initiated by International Confederation of Art Cinemas (CICAE) in partnership with Europa Cinemas and will take place in more than 1000 cities across Europe. The purpose of Art Cinema Day is support and endorsement of festival and auteur film and emphasizing its value in intellectual development of modern cinematic community.
This particular event will be happening in Ukraine for the first time. “Zhovten” Cinema is a sole national movie theatre that will host the Art Cinema Day as a part of European cinematic community.
Within the special programme in “Zhovten” the following will take place – showing of new European films, exhibition of polish retro film posters, meetup discussion regarding “Ukrainian Integration into European cinematic space: achievements and challenges” with the participation of Ukrainian cinematographers with co-production experience.

“Zhovten” Cinema is a popular Kiev cultural institution, which provides viewers with wide arrange of cinematography for every taste – from festival and auteur films to mainstream novelties. Filmhouse opened its doors in January 1931 and is built in constructivism style popular in 1920-30. In 2014 “Zhovten” suffered great damage due to an arson. Building renovation took almost a year to complete with the financial assistance of Kiev City State Administration and patronage activities of public campaigners.
Filmhouse has six cinema halls and meets all modern requirements in both technical quality of the show and the level of service. 260.000 people visited “Zhovten” in 2016. Unique repertoire approach is aimed to increase interest towards national Ukrainian filmmaking. Last year more than 30 new Ukrainian films were screened in the theatre, which comprise almost all that were released that year. “Zhovten” is a participant of diverse programmes of International network of cinemas for the circulation of European films “Europa Cinemas”.
